Effective Revision Techniques
Most students revise the wrong way — reading notes again and again, highlighting everything, or trying to memorise entire chapters the night before an exam. At Mathina, we teach evidence-based revision techniques used by top-performing students, so your child learns smarter, not harder. What This Module Covers ✔ Active Recall Students learn how to test themselves effectively, improving memory and understanding faster than passive reading. ✔ Spaced Repetition A simple method that strengthens long-term memory by revisiting topics at the right time — reducing last-minute stress. ✔ Note-Making That Works We show students how to create short, powerful notes that act as revision tools, not clutter. ✔ Memory Techniques Proven methods such as mind maps, flashcards, and keyword triggers to help students remember key concepts with confidence. ✔ Avoiding Wasted Time Students discover why certain habits (highlighting, copying notes, cramming) don’t work — and what to do instead. Outcome for Students By the end of this module, students will know exactly how to revise, what method to use for each subject, and how to boost their grades with efficient, focused study sessions.

About Lesson

Learn to manage your time effectively without burning out.

1. Why Balance Matters

Many students spend all their time studying or doing homework and neglect rest, sleep, or relaxation.

A balanced routine:

  • Improves focus and productivity

  • Boosts memory and learning

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Helps maintain energy and motivation

  • Prevents burnout

Balance is not about spending equal time on everything but about allocating the right amount of time for each activity.

2. How to Balance Homework and Revision

Step 1: List All Tasks

  • Homework for each subject

  • Revision topics

  • Projects and assignments

Step 2: Prioritise

Use a simple priority system:

  • High priority: due soon or difficult subjects

  • Medium priority: important but less urgent

  • Low priority: optional or long-term tasks

Step 3: Allocate Time

  • Assign specific time blocks for homework

  • Schedule separate revision sessions for each subject

  • Mix subjects (e.g., Maths then English) to avoid fatigue

Example:

  • 4:00–5:00 pm: Maths homework

  • 5:10–5:40 pm: Biology revision

  • 5:40–5:50 pm: Break

  • 5:50–6:20 pm: English revision

3. Why Rest is Critical

Rest is not a waste of time — it helps the brain consolidate learning.

  • Short breaks (5–10 mins) improve focus during study sessions

  • Longer breaks (30–60 mins) prevent mental fatigue

  • Sleep is essential for memory and exam performance

Tip: Use the Pomodoro Technique:

  • 25 minutes focused study → 5-minute break

  • Repeat 4 times → Take a longer 15–20 min break

4. How to Mix Study, Homework, and Rest

  1. Plan the day using your daily schedule

  2. Include at least one break every 25–50 minutes

  3. Alternate subjects to maintain interest

  4. Avoid overloading: maximum 3–4 study/revision blocks per evening

  5. Schedule fun or exercise to refresh your mind

5. Practical Example of a Balanced Study Evening

Time Activity
4:00–4:40 pm Maths homework
4:40–4:50 pm Break (snack/stretch)
4:50–5:30 pm Science revision (flashcards/Active Recall)
5:30–5:40 pm Break (walk/relax)
5:40–6:20 pm English essay planning
6:20–6:30 pm Quick review of completed tasks
6:30–7:00 pm Free time / relax

This approach balances study, homework, and rest while keeping the student productive.

6. Tips for Staying Balanced

  • Avoid studying late at night — aim for consistent sleep

  • Keep one day partially free for hobbies or relaxation

  • Listen to your body: tired? Take a short break

  • Adjust schedule weekly to match workload and energy levels

  • Reward yourself after completing major tasks

7. Common Mistakes Students Make

🚫 Skipping breaks to “study more” → leads to fatigue
🚫 Mixing too many subjects without structure → reduces focus
🚫 Ignoring sleep → memory and performance drop
🚫 Spending hours on homework without revising → imbalance
🚫 Forgetting to track completed tasks → loss of motivation

8. Lesson Summary

  • Balance is key for productivity and mental health

  • Plan study, homework, and revision in clear blocks

  • Include regular breaks and sufficient sleep

  • Alternate subjects to avoid fatigue

  • Use practical daily schedules for better focus and efficiency

With balance, students can study smarter, not longer, and improve learning outcomes while maintaining their wellbeing.
